Name Trains and Stations
Photographer David R. Sweetland was on-hand at Northern Maine Junction to record the
passaage of Maine Central's "The Kennebec" on 11 May 1957. If the name "Kennebec" sounds
unfamiliar don't be surprised, neither has a vast majority of today's railfan community. One
of the few name passenger trains serving the New England states during the 1940s/50s, "The
Kennebec" ran between Portland, Maine, and Boston, thanks to a joint operating agreement with
the Boston & Maine railroad. If you're wondering about the name, it was in tribute to a
170-mile state river famous for its historic shipbuilding industry and ecological habitat.
By the way, noted author Art Peterson has written several articles on name passenger trains and major train stations for the Diesel Shop website during the past 24 months. Those profiles have been assembled into a separate collection and are presented here. That section also includes related articles by other contributors. Links to all of those name trains and historic stations are located in the following table. |
